Colombian Amazon
We will venture into the jungle to live with the Tikuna community, learning more about their way of life, rituals, and ancestral knowledge

Summary

Prospective expedition

The Tikuna have inhabited the Amazon for centuries, developing a culture deeply connected to the rainforest and its natural cycles. Isolated for generations, they have preserved their ancestral traditions, which revolve around fishing, hunting, and a unique relationship with the environment.

This exploratory expedition will take us to the heart of Tikuna territory, an area with no infrastructure and no tourist presence. We’ll take small planes and navigate for hours along remote rivers to reach isolated communities and immerse ourselves as deeply as possible in their way of life. During our time there, flexibility will be key — we’ll depend on the weather, the condition of the land, and the decisions made by the community. This journey is suited only for those who are truly eager to step out of their comfort zone.

(01)

Community living

We will integrate into the daily life of the Tikuna, sharing their routines, learning about their customs, and gaining insight into their worldview. We won’t be mere observers, but active participants — joining them in their tasks and sleeping together in the communal maloca. In this area, it is possible to come across uncontacted Indigenous groups, which requires us to act with the utmost caution. We will avoid any encounters with uncontacted groups and follow our hosts' guidance to respect their rules and the boundaries of their territory.
(02)

Adventure

This is not a conventional expedition with a rigid itinerary. We are venturing into a remote and challenging area, where we must adapt to the rhythms of the jungle and the conditions we encounter. No prior experience in adventure travel is required, but a strong willingness to work as a team and face unexpected situations with resilience, a positive attitude, and a true traveler’s spirit is essential.
(03)

Nature

We’ll have the opportunity to witness the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon. Along the way, we may spot wildlife such as the iconic pink river dolphins — one of the most fascinating freshwater species in the world. They inhabit the Amazon Basin and are the largest river dolphins, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length. We might also catch a glimpse of more elusive species like tapirs, howler monkeys, or caimans.

Day 01 [DECEMBER 04, 2025].

Country of origin — Leticia

Welcome to Colombia! We will pick you up at the Leticia airport, the gateway to the Amazon. We will head to the hotel to rest and attend a briefing session where we will go over the itinerary, local culture, and the plans we have in mind.

In the evening, we will have dinner together to get to know each other and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 02 [DECEMBER 05, 2025].

Leticia — Tarapacá

We will depart early by small plane to Tarapacá, where we will explore this Amazonian village. Along the way, we will get a breathtaking aerial view of the vastness of the jungle. Our adventure has begun!

Once there, we will inform the local Indigenous authorities of our arrival and finalize the preparations for the journey ahead toward Tikuna territory. We will sleep with very basic infrastructure.

Day 03 [DECEMBER 06, 2025].

Tarapacá — Tikuna Community

We will set off by boat toward Tikuna territory on a journey of approximately six hours along the river, where we may have the chance to spot the famous pink Amazon river dolphins. Our goal is to venture as far as possible from the main villages to fully immerse ourselves in the traditional Tikuna way of life, which is why the boat ride is so long.

Along the way, we will stop in a few local communities to eat and take a short break before reaching the chosen village, where we will be welcomed by our hosts. We will all sleep together in hammocks inside a maloca (a traditional communal house used as a social, cultural, and spiritual center) with basic infrastructure. This will be our base of operations for the coming days.

Day 04, 05, 06, 07, 08
[07 - 11 DECEMBER, 2025].

Tikuna Community

During these days, we’ll experience a full cultural immersion with the Tikuna community, taking part in daily activities such as body painting with huito (a tropical fruit traditionally used to create temporary natural dyes), hunting (tapirs, giant armadillos, monkeys, deer, borugas...), fishing, and preparing traditional foods like mazato (fermented yuca drink) and fariña (toasted cassava flour).

We’ll also join community members on jungle excursions, where we may collect medicinal plants with the women, gather ingredients to prepare curare (a hunting poison used on arrow tips), and—weather and community decision permitting—visit a nearby village. In this area, there are several uncontacted communities, so we will be especially careful to follow our hosts' guidance and avoid any interaction with groups who choose not to receive visitors.

In short, we’ll have a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Tikuna way of life, always respecting their decisions and needs. We’ll sleep in hammocks inside the communal maloca.

Day 09, 10, 11, 12
[DECEMBER 12 - 15, 2025].

Tikuna community — Tarapacá and surrounding area

We’ll say goodbye to our Tikuna hosts and begin our return journey toward Tarapacá, using these days to visit other nearby communities. There, we may take part in the preparation of fariña (a traditional food), learn more about local culture, witness the traditional fishing of pirarucú—one of the largest freshwater fish in the world (reaching up to 3 meters in length and 200 kg in weight)—spot pink river dolphins and other regional wildlife, or participate in traditional ceremonies.

Some local groups use mambé, ambil, and rapé, substances traditionally consumed during ceremonies and community gatherings to strengthen social bonds, enhance focus, and connect spiritually with the rainforest. These are always used in a ritual context, where respect for traditions and the teachings of community elders is essential. If the opportunity arises, those who wish may take part in these ceremonies [not included in the price of the expedition].

Participation in these activities will depend on the decision of the community leaders and weather conditions. We’ll sleep in accommodations with basic infrastructure.
