ISOLATED TERRITORIES
‍
Day 01 [DECEMBER 29, 2025].
Welcome! Today, we will arrive in Juba, the capital of the country. After picking you up at the airport, we will take a tour around the city and officially kick off our great adventure. Today is a day to rest and take care of the logistical aspects of the trip, such as obtaining all the necessary permits for the upcoming days. We will spend the night at a hotel in Juba.
Day 02 [DECEMBER 30, 2025].
After breakfast, we will head to the city of Bor, from where we will visit the Sudd marshes—the largest swamp in Africa, spanning an area the size of Croatia—and one of the most impressive wetlands in the world. This ecosystem, formed by the waters of the White Nile, is a sanctuary of biodiversity, home to numerous bird species, hippos, and crocodiles.
In the afternoon, we will go to the local port, where we can taste freshly prepared fish cooked in a traditional way and observe the bustling trade that defines this riverside city. Afterwards, we will visit the Malik and Langbar markets, the most important in the Dinka community, where we will witness their daily life, art, and traditions.
Later, we will take a boat to venture into the heart of the Sudd marshes, sailing to the village of Akwak. This community of Dinka fishermen has lived in these waters for centuries, building their homes on floating islands made of reeds and papyrus. There, we will spend time with the locals, learn about their traditional fishing techniques, and enjoy a spectacular sunset over the horizon of the wetlands.
After a day full of adventures, we will have dinner and set up our tents for the night, going to rest with the feeling of having witnessed a corner of the world as remote as it is fascinating.
Day 03, 04 [DECEMBER 31, 2025 / JANUARY 01, 2026]
At dawn, we will embark on a boat journey into the depths of the Sudd marshes, sailing along the Nile River while enjoying the fresh morning air. After this early adventure, we will return to the camp for breakfast and then cross the Nile to reach the territory of the Mundari tribe. We will spend the afternoon with them, learning more about their way of life and traditions, and we will have the unique opportunity to witness the deep and sacred bond that unites the Mundari with their cattle.
Tonight will be a special one, as we bid farewell to the year here, in the heart of Mundari territory. Although the community does not typically celebrate New Year's Eve, we will organize a small gathering to mark the transition into the new year. Under the starry sky, we will share laughter, stories, and a symbolic toast that will undoubtedly make this New Year's Eve one of the most unforgettable of our lives.
We will sleep in tents near their settlement.
At dawn, we will take the opportunity to witness some of this community’s fascinating traditional practices: cattle stimulation, cleansing rituals with urine, and the ash massages they perform on their cows. As the temperature rises, we will begin our journey back to Juba. There, we will spend the rest of the day, have dinner, and stay overnight at our hotel.
Day 05 [02 JANUARY, 2026].
After having breakfast at our hotel, we will head to the province of Eastern Equatoria, where we will have the privilege of spending time with the Lopit community. We will stay in the village of Imehejek, known for its beautiful traditional houses and public squares, which also serve as gathering spaces for communal discussions. We will sleep within the community in our tents.
Day 06, 07 [03 / 04 JANUARY, 2026].
If we are lucky, in the morning we may witness one of the impressive communal dances of the Lopit. The dancers, dressed in ostrich feathers and leopard skins, move to the rhythm of the percussion, performing circular choreographies.
The Lopit community has a rich musical tradition, where different types of drums set the pace for their ceremonies and rituals, each serving a specific purpose.
After leaving Imehejek, we will head towards the Boya Hills. There, we will meet the Larim and witness some of their daily activities, such as grain milling, livestock care, and meal preparation. Their vernacular architecture is particularly significant, as well as the traditional jewelry and scarifications that cover their bodies.
Larim women are famous for their dances and songs, which, with luck, we will have the chance to witness. The men, known for their reserved nature, usually remain on the sidelines of these performances, making them a predominantly female expression of identity and community.
We will spend two nights in Larim territory, sleeping in tents.
Day 08 [05 JANUARY, 2026].
After enjoying our last morning with the Larim community, we will set off on our journey to the city of Kapoeta, the central hub of the Toposa territory. We will make stops at the lively local markets, where we can learn more about their livestock-based economy.
Upon arriving at the village of Mogos, the largest settlement of the Toposa community, we will take some time to rest while our guide meets with the elders and local leaders to officially introduce us. After that, we will take a walk through the village, witnessing the community’s evening activities, such as cattle milking and meal preparation. We will sleep in tents.
Day 09, 10 [06 / 07 JANUARY, 2026].
After breakfast and bidding farewell to the Toposa, we will gather our belongings and set off for Lopet, the home of the Jie people. The roads in this area are notoriously poor, so we will need to be patient when our jeeps get stuck in the mud. Once in Lopet, we will immerse ourselves in the daily life of the Jie, a community closely related to the Toposa, with whom they share language and cultural roots.
As night falls, we will celebrate with a small gathering, sharing stories, laughter, and one last evening in the company of this fascinating community. The next day, we will pack up our camp and begin the journey back to the city of Kapoeta, where we will spend the afternoon. We will sleep in tents both nights.
Day 11, 12 [08 / 09 JANUARY, 2026].
We will start the day with a visit to the lively Kapoeta market, a bustling meeting point where traders from different parts of the country display their goods. It will be an excellent opportunity to pick up souvenirs from our expedition. After that, we will head to Kapoeta airport to take our local flight back to Juba.Â
In the evening, we will gather for our farewell dinner—a perfect moment to share anecdotes, reflect on the adventures we've experienced, and celebrate together the end of this unforgettable journey. We will spend the night at our hotel in Juba, and the next day, we will take our return flights. Until the next adventure!Â
