A unique way of understanding death

We will witness the emblematic funeral rites of the Toraja community and learn more about their particular relationship with death.

Summary

In the heart of Sulawesi

For the Toraja people, death is not synonymous with mourning, but rather an occasion for major social events. The deceased can only pass to the afterlife after a funeral has taken place; one that may, at times, be postponed for several years. In the meantime, the mummified body of the deceased lives with the family and is cared for as if still alive: it receives visits, sleeps in its own bed, and is offered food and drink.

During the summer months, the Toraja hold their long-awaited funerals, which last several days and can bring together hundreds of people. Everyone gathers, eats, and drinks to celebrate the end of the vigil and the moment when the spirit of the deceased finally moves on to the other side. After this farewell celebration, the body and the belongings of the deceased are placed in deep caves. On the exterior, small balconies are built, where finely carved and painted wooden figures are displayed. These become avatars of the person who has passed away.

Art and tradition

Toraja vernacular art and architecture are unique in the world. We will explore their iconic houses, called tongkonan, and visit their impressive cliffside tombs, guarded by wooden tau tau figures, which represent the deceased and watch over their eternal rest.

Funeral rites

Thanks to our local contacts, we will have the opportunity to attend funeral ceremonies. This is the most important event in the community and requires meticulous preparation, often including buffalo sacrifices, traditional dances, and elaborate processions. Additionally, we will try to witness a ma’nene’, or “second funeral,” a ceremony in which the mummies are taken out of the caves to be cleaned, dressed in new clothes, and offered snacks and cigarettes.

Local life

We will stay in a traditional guesthouse, which will allow us to get to know the host family, we'll explore local markets and immerse ourselves in the daily life of this fascinating community.

Day 01 [AUGUST 22, 2026]

Country of origin - Makassar

Welcome to Indonesia! After arriving at Makassar airport, we will head directly to our hotel, where we will have time to rest after the journey. Makassar is the gateway to this great adventure and the largest city in southern Sulawesi, with a vibrant mix of cultures and a history linked to the spice trade. We will spend the night at the hotel.

Day 02 [AUGUST 23, 2026]

Makassar - Rante Pao

Today we will begin our journey to the mythical region of Tana Toraja, but first, we will stop at Rammang Rammang, an impressive landscape of karst formations. After the visit, we will continue our journey to Toraja, a long but scenic trip where we will witness how the landscape changes as we enter the highlands. Along the way, we will make several stops to stretch our legs and enjoy the local food, and finally, we will check in at our accommodation, a traditional guesthouse where we will stay for 5 nights.

Day 03, 04, 05, 06 [August 24 – 27, 2026]

Toraja Community

The next four days will be dedicated to exploring some of the most iconic places in the region, such as the villages of Ke'te' Kesu' and Pallawa, famous for the well-preserved traditional houses, known as tongkonan. The tongkonan stand on wooden pillars and are topped with a bamboo roof; the walls are decorated with intricate paintings that depict patterns full of symbolism. They are the center of Toraja social life, embodying the bonds a family has with its ancestors, as well as with close and extended family.

We will also visit the iconic tombs that rise on the exterior walls of the caves of Tampang Allo, Suaya, and Lemo, with their balconies adorned with tau tau figures, as well as the niches—made in living trees—where the mummies of deceased babies were traditionally placed, in the Kambira area. In Batutumonga, we will take an easy 3-hour trek, where we will be able to enjoy the spectacular landscape of the region, full of trees and rice terraces. There, we will also stop to visit the rock-carved tombs of Lo’ko’ mata. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to witness funerals, including the “second funerals” or ma'nene'.

We find it important to emphasize that the Toraja relate to the deceased in a very different way than what is normalized in the West, so it is necessary for us to have an open and non-judgmental attitude when trying to understand their customs. It is important to keep in mind that for the family of the deceased, inviting foreigners to the ceremony is a great honor, as it confirms the status of the deceased.

Of course, we will do everything in our power to ensure that the cultural immersion is a priority during our trip, always respecting and adapting to the wishes of the families who are granting us privileged access to their culture and way of life.

Day 07 [AUGUST 28, 2026]

Toraja Community - Makassar

We will wake up early to say goodbye to the Toraja community and return to the city of Makassar. Depending on our arrival time, we may visit the traditional Paotere harbor and observe the traditional phinisi boats, handcrafted wooden vessels built by the Bugis community, or the La Galigo Museum, which houses a fascinating collection of artifacts reflecting the island's ethnic diversity. In the evening, we will have a farewell dinner and then head to our hotel for the night.

Day 08 [AUGUST 29, 2026]

Makassar - Country of origin

The time has come to head back home! We will head to the airport, where we will catch our flights back to our home country... until we meet again on the next adventure ;)
